NIHP concrete pouring underway

2014-09-15

Concrete pouring is underway at both North Island Hospitals Project sites.

Following official groundbreaking ceremonies in early August and extensive excavation work, crews began pouring the concrete foundation footings at both new hospital sites last week. These footings will be the base for structural columns which will support each of the hospitals’ floors.

The concrete work has brought a virtual parade of mixers to and from each site, and that’s just a warm up for the concrete pouring to come. Over the next eleven months, an estimated 18,253 cubic metres of concrete will be poured for the new $331.7 million, 153-bed Comox Valley Hospital. That’s roughly 1,800 truckloads.

An estimated 15,039 cubic metres of concrete, more than 1,500 truckloads, will be poured for the new $274.5 million, 95-bed Campbell River Hospital over the same period.

That means a lot of work for local concrete suppliers, Cumberland Ready Mix at the Comox Valley Hospital site and a combination of Upland Ready Mix and Island Ready Mix at the Campbell River Hospital.

Pouring for the concrete footings and foundations, including walls and structural columns, will continue into December.

Both hospitals are slated for completion by late 2017.
